What is a tablet?
The term „tablet“ is a word of Latin derivation – which means “small plate”. A tablet is a solid pharmaceutical form, which can be unitdosed. A tablet consists of compressed powder or granules. The results of this pressing are mainly biconvex tablets, as these can be swallowed easily due to the rounded form.

What is a hard gelatine capsule?
Hard gelatine capsules are made out of a gelatine mass, without using diluents. They consist of two cylindrical hollow moulds, which both have an end in the form of a semisphere. Both of the capsules’ halves are nested by help of a channel-pin-mechanism. These capsules contain mostly solid pharmaceutical forms such as powder, granule, pellets, micro capsules. At Klocke it is furthermore possible, to fill several of these solid pharmaceutical forms in one and the same hard gelatine capsule.

What are granules?
According to the Pharmacopoeia, granules are a preparation “consisting of solid, dry aggregates of powder particles. They contain one or more active substances with or without excipients and, if necessary, colouring matter and flavouring substances.”

top

What is a fluidized bed (-> fluidized bed granulator)?
When pelletising in a fluidized bed, the working steps mixing, moistening and drying are done within one machine. The pharmaceutical solid particles are floating by help of an upward flow and are thereby mixed and finally dried. After drying, the particles are discharged with an airflow.

What is a sugar-coated tablet?
A sugar-coated tablet is in most cases a round or oval tablet, which is - after its manufacturing - covered by a sugar syrup (percentage of sugar = 70). The result is a hardfaced tablet, whose active ingredients are protected, so that they can be released selectively (e.g. in the stomach or later in the bowel by help of an enteric-coating).

top

What is a coated tablet?
A coated tablet consists of a tablet core, which is sprayed with a kind of lacquer, thereby, the drops are gathered at the core, shared out and so a coat is generated. This coat is very thin and its part of the total volume is about 3 to 5%. The coating is used e.g. for pellets with an unsightly or smelly appearance (e.g. sometimes herbal pellets). Furthermore, swallowing is easier when a tablet is coated.

What is a blister?
In the pharmaceutical field, a blister is a protection packing for (mostly) tablets or capsules. The advantage of a blister, consisting of plastic- or aluminium foil in comparison to a small glass or bottle is the augmented hygiene due to unitdosing of the tablet and the better protection against e.g. high humidity or dirt. The blister foil can be printed with e.g. days of the week, so that a daily taking is possible.

What is a wallet?
A wallet is a folded card, in which e.g. a blister plus leaflet is inserted. By help of the folded sides, additional product information can be imprinted.

top

What is a primary packaging?
The primary packaging is in direct contact with the packed product. In case of a blister this is the foil, which is in touch with the packed tablet. In case of the pharmaceutical industry, this primary packaging has to follow strict hygienic regulations for manufacturing and further packaging.

top

What is a secondary packaging?
The secondary packaging is an outer package, which has no direct contact to the packed product itself, it is for example a folding box or a wallet. The hygienic requirements are by far not as strict as for the primary packaging.

top

What is a clinical study?
During a clinical study, pharmaceutical products are tested with probands, in order to check the effectiveness and security of the product. A pharmaceutical product is only allowed to be sold on the market, when sufficient data regarding effectiveness, agreeability and security is available. Clinical studies are carried out within a controlled environment.

top

What is a climate chamber?
By help of electronic settings, in a climate chamber defined temperature- and humidity conditions are created and e.g. samples of material are tested in order to declare, if these samples are changing in one or the other way (e.g. foil can get soft or clammy when it is too humid or too hot and may therefore not be useable for Asia). The conditions are measured and controlled permanently.

top

What is a soft gelatine capsule?
Soft gelatine capsules are made out of a gelatine mass by using diluents. Soft gelatine capsules are mainly filled with liquid and semi-liquid preparations. The manufacturing and filling of the soft gelatine capsule is carried out in one production step. Klocke is not producing soft gelatine capsules, however, we pack them gladly!
